Lingfield sits roughly five miles east of our Copthorne workshop, which makes it one of the closest villages we look after. A quick run along the B2028, or a hop across via the B2029 from Felbridge, and you’re at our door. If you live in Lingfield, Dormansland or Crowhurst, you genuinely couldn’t have a more local timing chain specialist. We’re a small workshop that does one job properly: BMW timing chain replacement and Ford wet belt replacement. No MOTs, no tyres, no oil services on the side — just the engine job most general garages would rather pass on.
Why Lingfield drivers choose Timing Chain Gatwick
Lingfield quietly relies on its cars. The station feeds commuters into London Bridge and Victoria, the racecourse brings traffic in on race days, and the lanes around Dormansland and Crowhurst are full of small farms, equestrian yards and trade vans that have to keep working. When a timing chain or wet belt starts complaining, you don’t want to lose the vehicle for a fortnight to a main dealer in Croydon. Here’s what we offer locally:
- Genuine OEM parts only — Febi, INA, original BMW and Ford components. No pattern chains that stretch again in 20,000 miles.
- Free vehicle collection within 15 miles — Lingfield is well inside that radius.
- Fixed-price quotes written up front, with no "while we’re in there" surprises.
- 12-month warranty on parts and labour.
- One job, done properly — we do timing chains and wet belts every working day, so the tooling and experience are already there.
- Mon to Sat opening, 9am to 6pm.
Lingfield cars and vans we work on
The mix of vehicles we see from RH7 reflects the area well — commuter diesels, a few executive petrols, and the working vans that keep local farms and trades ticking. The engines we focus on are the ones with a known history of trouble:
- BMW N47 2.0 diesel — the well-known rear-mounted chain issue. 118d, 120d, 318d, 320d, 520d, X1, X3 from roughly 2007 onwards.
- BMW N57 3.0 straight-six diesel — 330d, 530d, X5 and X6, where the lower chain and guides give way.
- BMW B47 — the successor diesel, in later 1, 2, 3 and 5 Series and the Mini Countryman.
- BMW N20 2.0 petrol — 320i, 328i, X1 and X3. Tensioner and guide wear.
- BMW B58 3.0 petrol — occasional chain rattle on earlier examples.
- Ford 1.0 EcoBoost — the famous wet belt in the Fiesta, Focus, B-Max, C-Max, EcoSport and Puma. See our 1.0 EcoBoost wet belt page.
- Ford 1.5 and 2.0 EcoBlue diesels — Transit, Custom, Ranger, Kuga, Galaxy, S-Max. See our Transit EcoBlue page and the wider EcoBlue wet belt service.
Free collection from RH7
Because Lingfield is so close to Copthorne — most journeys are under fifteen minutes — collection is genuinely simple. We routinely pick up from:
- Lingfield village centre, including the High Street, Vicarage Road and the area around the station
- Dormansland (RH7 6) — Hollow Lane, Plough Road, Hophurst Lane and the lanes towards Cowden
- Felbridge — the residential streets either side of the A22 between Lingfield and East Grinstead
- Crowhurst, Lingfield Common and the smaller hamlets out towards Haxted Mill
- Newchapel and the racecourse side of the village
If the car is still drivable, we collect, complete the work and bring it back. If it’s properly unwell, we’ll arrange recovery. Either way, all you need to do is pick up the phone. For anything outside RH7, our areas we cover page lists the full collection zone.
Warning signs to act on
Timing chains and wet belts rarely fail without warning, but the early signs are easy to dismiss as "just a cold morning". Here’s what should actually prompt a phone call:
- Cold-start rattle — a distinct chain-like noise for the first two to five seconds after a cold start, fading as oil pressure builds. On BMW N47s in particular this is the classic early sign.
- Diesel-like knock or whirr from the front of the engine on Ford EcoBlue and EcoBoost units, often more obvious at idle once warm.
- Fault codes involving camshaft or crankshaft correlation, VANOS adjustment limits, or timing over-advance. P0016, P0017, P0018 and similar are red flags.
- Low oil pressure warning — wet belt debris blocks the oil pickup strainer on the 1.0 EcoBoost. This is the failure mode you do not want to ignore.
- Black sludge or rubber flecks visible on the dipstick or oil filler cap on a EcoBoost.
- Misfires, rough running, or an engine that suddenly feels gutless after a long motorway run.
If you’ve spotted any of these, acting early is dramatically cheaper than dealing with a snapped chain or stripped belt — a timing failure on these engines almost always means bent valves, and often a replacement engine.
Costs and what’s involved
Honest answer: the price depends on the engine, the parts kit needed, and whether anything else needs replacing while access is open. We don’t publish flat numbers because that’s how customers end up feeling stung when the final invoice is higher than the website promised. What we will always do is give you a written, fixed-price quote before any spanners come out — request a free estimate here.
As a rough guide to what’s involved:
- BMW N47 / B47 diesel — the gearbox has to come out to access the rear-mounted chain. A full day or more of skilled labour, plus a complete chain, guides, tensioner and sprocket kit.
- BMW N57 / N20 / B58 — front-of-engine access, less labour-intensive than the N47 but still a serious job.
- Ford 1.0 EcoBoost wet belt — belt, tensioner, oil pump components, sump off to clean out debris, plus fresh oil and filter.
- Ford EcoBlue (Transit, Custom, Ranger) — wet belt kit, often with auxiliary belt at the same time, plus oil service.
Most jobs are turned around within a day or two of the vehicle arriving.
