“How much does a timing chain replacement cost?” is the question we get asked more than any other. The honest answer — and we mean honest, not the “it depends” deflection — is that it depends on three things: which engine you have, which engine variant within that family, and how thorough the workshop doing it actually is. Here’s a real breakdown.
What drives the cost?
- Where the chain is in the engine. A front-mounted chain (most petrols, most Fords) is a few hours of access. A rear-mounted chain (BMW N47, B47, N57) needs the gearbox out — a full day or more of labour.
- How many parts get changed. A chain on its own is half the story — tensioners, guides, sprockets and seals all wear together. A good job replaces the lot.
- Genuine vs pattern parts. Pattern timing chains exist for £40 a kit. They will not last. Genuine BMW/Ford parts cost 3–5× more, and they do.
- Specialist vs generalist labour rate. A specialist can do a BMW N47 chain in a day. A generalist can take three. Their lower hourly rate often doesn’t make up for it.
Realistic 2026 prices — Sussex & Surrey
These are typical fitted prices we’re seeing in our area for a complete, genuine-parts replacement at independent specialist workshops:
- Ford 1.0 EcoBoost wet belt (Fiesta, Focus, Puma): typically lower hundreds — call it the price of a long weekend away.
- Ford 1.5 EcoBlue wet belt: a little more than the EcoBoost, due to access.
- Ford 2.0 EcoBlue wet belt (Transit Custom, Kuga, Galaxy): more again, particularly on vans.
- BMW N47 timing chain (320d, 520d, 116d, 118d etc. 2007–2014): mid four figures at the main dealer, significantly less at a specialist.
- BMW B47 timing chain (2014 onwards diesels): similar to N47, sometimes slightly more.
- BMW N57 timing chain (330d, 530d, X5 30d etc.): top of the range — V6 diesel, more parts, more access.

Hidden costs to watch for
- Oil pump pickup — on EcoBoost/EcoBlue wet belt cars, if the belt has shed, the pickup may need replacing. Add a couple of hundred.
- Damaged guides — if your BMW chain has been left rattling too long, the plastic guides may be worn into the head. Add machining or head removal.
- Valve damage — if the chain has jumped, you’re past the timing chain repair stage and into engine reconditioning.
- Vanos units — BMW variable cam systems sometimes need attention while everything is off.
Should I do it on a car worth less than the repair?
The honest answer depends on the rest of the car. A 14-year-old 320d with a rusted floor and an MOT due isn’t worth a £1,800 chain job. A 6-year-old 320d that’s otherwise mint with full service history and you trust the rest of it is a no-brainer.
What you should not do is keep driving it. A snapped chain = a scrap car. A worn chain replaced = another 100,000 miles of service.
